Tech giants deeply affected by Trump's visa ban extension

Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending a variety of visas allowing foreigners to work in the US through the end of the year. This has had a strong impact on the science and tech industries, where many companies are recruiting international talents.

Trump's order might put a freeze on tech giants

According to the order, until the end of the year, the United States will expand and extend the ban of foreign-worker visas — in particular, including the H-1B visa granted to researchers and tech employees from other countries. The freeze went into effect on June 24th, putting many companies in a difficult situation. The Department of State indicates that the U.S issued more than 188,000 H-1B visas across sectors in 2019.

In fact, technology firms depend on H1-B visas to import technical expertise from across the globe, helping them retain the strategic advantage of Silicon Valley in an increasingly global sector. In a January report from the National Science Foundation, 30% of people in science and engineering work in the United States were originally from other countries.

Tech giants are raising their voices against Trump

Therefore, executives from tech giants like Twitter, Amazon, Google are against Trump’s decision to stop foreigners’ entry. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a tweet that he was "deeply disappointed by this proclamation," and that: "Like Apple, this nation of immigrants has always found strength in our diversity, and hope in the enduring promise of the American Dream. There is no new prosperity without both."

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted his opposition to the order Monday, saying: "Immigration has contributed immensely to America's economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today."

Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, had also raised his voice, “Now is not the time to cut our nation off from the world’s talent or create uncertainty and anxiety. Immigrants play a vital role in our company and support our country’s critical infrastructure. They are contributing to this country at a time when we need them most.”
